Q. I need help. We had our driveway ashphalted May 2006. It was originally rock. In 4 months large cracks appeared on 1 side. We tried since Sept 2006 to get someone out to check it. Finally in July 2007 they came out but only to seal coat and tried to patch the cracks which ran the whole length of 1 side up to 1/2 wide. It looks horrible and they are saying this is the way they fix it. We believe it wasn't graded correctly to begin with and that putting seal coating on it is just a bandage and not fixing the real problem. It this a typical solution? Should cracks this bad develop in a driveway in 4 months after installation. We are in a battle with them.

A. Dear Sue,
My suggestion is to call upon a different contractor (at least one, perhaps several) for assessment and advice -- including advice about resealing with a new top coat. It seems that calling upon the original contractor is not serving you, and causing you more stress. If the cracks remain 1/2" wide or less, a crack filler may be your best bet; if the cracks are wider, then a cold patch could be necessary. One final note: from your question it seems that the cracking began in September. Was there heavy rain in your area at that time? Cracking and buckling with heavy rain can be an indication of poor drainage.
